A few weeks ago, I took my 8 yr. old daughter Liberty to see the Justin Bieber movie. About 1/2 hour into the movie Liberty was starting to ask "is it almost over?" and I was saying "shhhh" because I didn't want to miss a thing. Yes, I have the fever, Bieber fever, but it's not because of his cute boy looks or voice. For anyone who owns a business, promotes an organization or club or just wants to be in the know, you've got to see this movie. It's riveting. Justin Bieber and his managers will be the first to tell you it's not his voice or looks that got him noticed, it's social networking.
Are you aware that he was first discovered on a You Tube video? You Tube puts anything and everything (sometimes too much) out there for everyone who is looking to see. And these days almost everyone is looking. It doesn't have to be directly through You Tube. Links to You Tube videos show up on e-mails, Facebook, websites and more. Put it out there and it can be found, just like Justin was. Once he was discovered and Usher realized his voice was great he had to get play time on the radio. To get the radio stations to play his music Justin started visiting the stations for interviews and playing tidbits of his music. Of course having a name like Usher behind him helped, but hey, he got in. A small following of young girls started following him but it wasn't enough to get his music played so he turned to Twitter. Justin started tweeting the location of the radio stations he'd be visiting and within a few weeks, crowds started gathering at the stations and his music started being played more. Justin Bieber and his management used social networking sites to help him become a star and it worked quite well.
In the movie they give statistics and get much deeper into how this all tied in together. Of course there was singing, dancing and hair flipping, but to me that was the least important part of the movie. I was in awe at how much the movie focused on the business aspect of branding Justin Bieber. I left with a renewed feeling of the importance of social networking and my daughter left a bit excited to be out of there.
So I'm starting this blog admitting to have the fever. While I can't hold a tune or dance like Justin, I hope I can use social networking like he did to help grow The Cowboy Sports Association. I hope you'll follow along.
